The United Kingdom was forced to deploy its armed forces to deter Russian submarines that had entered its territorial waters. The intrusion occurred at the beginning of the year and lasted for a month.
This is what the British Defense Minister explained, John Healey, clarifying that the submarines intended to attack underwater infrastructure such as cables or gas pipelines.
As Healey explained, both the British Armed Forces and their allies, among whom he named Norway, detected this belligerent activity of Russian ships and coordinated to follow her and neutralize her.

The Minister of Defense stated that he was now revealing the operation to inform the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, that his forces had been detected.
“To President Putin, I say: ‘We are watching you. We are watching your activities against our cables and our gas pipelines. You must know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated, and there will be serious consequences“.
“Our armed forces let them know that they were being monitored, that their movements were not hidden as President Putin planned, and that his attempted operation had been exposed“.
According to Healey, the Russian detachment consisted of a Akula-class attack submarine and two specialized submarines of the Moscow Directorate for Deep Marine Research.
All the vessels left British territorial waters heading north and failed to damage the underwater infrastructure, he concludes.
Russian fleet off the United Kingdom
The Kremlin confirmed today that a ship of the Russian Navy escorted several oil tankers from the Russian “ghost fleet” when transiting the territorial waters of the United Kingdom.
“Russia considers itself entitled to defend its interests and will without fail take measures to do so,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, in his daily press conference.
The Kremlin representative noted that “in recent months we witnessed repeated acts of piracy in international waters”, which affected “its economic capacity”.
According to the newspaper The Telegraphthe frigate of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy’Admiral Grigorovich‘escorted across the English Channel two tankers from the Russian ghost fleet.
This comes two weeks after London promised stop all sanctioned vessels in the territorial waters of the Kingdom Unido.
According to the media, the Russian frigate escorted the Universal and Enigma oil tankers, while it was in turn followed by The ship ‘Tideforce’ of the British Royal Fleet.
On March 26, London authorized the British Navy to board and intercept ships of the so-called “ghost fleet” to transit through UK waters, in an attempt to cut off “a key financing channel” for the war in Ukraine.
According to London, about 75% of Russian crude oil is transported through this opaque networkon which the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on 544 vessels.
The British Executive maintains that the closure of its waters, including the English Channel, will force these ships to choose between longer and more expensive routes or expose themselves to being intercepted.
This measure would have forced the Russian “ghost fleet” to evade the Strait of La Mancha for several weeks, according to Western media.
