“Too late”: Trump blows up diplomatic channels with Iran after deadly bombings

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, assured that Iran lost the opportunity to resume bilateral negotiations, in the midst of an unprecedented military escalation after a joint attack by Washington and Tel Aviv against the Islamic Republic.

Through his social network Truth Social, the president affirmed that the Iranian leadership and armed forces have been “finished” and maintained that Tehran is now seeking an agreement, although — as he said — it is already too late to talk.

CROSS STATEMENTS AND IRANIAN DENIAL

Trump insisted that Iranian authorities tried to reach out to Washington after the bombings.

“They really want to reach an agreement. I told them they should have done it a week ago,” he wrote.

However, from Tehran the response was blunt. The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, denied any approach and stated: “We will not negotiate with the United States.”

The public contradiction reflects a climate of maximum distrust between both governments and shows the difficulty of establishing diplomatic channels in the midst of the armed conflict.

THE ATTACK THAT UNLEASHED THE CRISIS

Early on Saturday, February 28, US and Israeli forces launched a joint attack against Iran. According to the official version, the objective was to “eliminate the threats” posed by the Islamic Republic.

The bombings resulted in the death of the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as several senior military commanders. The operation marked a turning point in the already fragile regional stability.
