Vance offers to help Orbán “as much as he can” in the elections and accuses “EU bureaucrats” of interference

This Tuesday it was the turn of Vice President JD Vance, who visited Budapest, the Hungarian capital, to once again support the leader of the Magyar Government in a particularly delicate moment. Five days before the elections, his main rival, the conservative Péter Magyar, leads the voting intention polls with a clear advantage.

“The relationship and friendship between Hungary and the United States are very important,” Vance said during the joint press conference, in which he praised Orbán, closely linked to the MAGA movement in the United States, and promised to “support him as much as I can.”

During his appearance, the vice president embraced some of the arguments that the Hungarian leader has encouraged throughout the campaign, such as the confrontation with the European Union over various issues, including the shipment of weapons to Ukraine. “Hungary has become one of the worst examples of foreign electoral interference,” Vance said. “The amount of interference by the Brussels bureaucracy has been truly embarrassing“, he added.

Subsequently, he accused those “EU bureaucrats in Brussels” of trying to “destroy the economy and energy independence” of Hungary, in opposition to Orbán. “They have tried to reduce the country’s energy independence. They have tried to make energy more expensive for Hungarian consumers. And they have done all this because they hate this guy,” Vance stressed.

This is another example of the importance that Trump attaches to supporting ideologically similar leaders. The last time Orbán and Trump met was in November 2025, at the White House in Washington, where they inaugurated the “golden era” of relations between both countries.

Vance’s visit to Budapest takes place two months after that of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubioduring which a cooperation agreement on civil nuclear energy was signed. On that occasion, Rubio transferred Trump’s support to Orbán. “This very committed to your success, since your success is our success, because this relationship that we have here in Central Europe through you is essential and vital for our national interests in the coming years,” he noted.
