“The powers belong to the EU and are agreed upon as a bloc”

The vice president of the European Commission, Teresa Riberahas warned Donald Trump that “it is not possible to launch retaliation” against Spain or against any other EU country after the US president threatened this Tuesday to break off trade with our country for preventing the use of the military bases in Morón and Rota.

“Trade negotiations correspond to the European Commission and it is not possible to fragment and divide the Member States. Trump cannot get out of the photo,” he said this Wednesday in an interview on Ser.

Ribera has insisted that “all powers” in economic matters belong to the European Commission and “they are negotiated en bloc.”

“And the US knows that”he pointed out, to make it clear that “they are not interested in breaking relations with the EU or with Spain.”

For this reason, he has asked for “respect for international law” after Trump’s threats to Spain. “We must respect each other, the citizens, the agreements and Europe,” added the vice president of the European Commission for a Clean Transition.

In this sense, he has opined that Trump’s statement to “cut off” trade with our country “is similar to his threats in a bravado tone about Greenland.”

“This way of speaking from Trump is deeply disturbing for the people and the economy. This way of speaking from Keir Starmer, from Macron, from Sánchez…”, he continued.
