“The Castro regime has been brutal, but they lived off of Venezuela. Now they no longer live off of Venezuela. Venezuela does not send them energy, fuel, oil, money, or anything. They did not survive without Venezuela, they could not have made it and we have cut off everything from them. So yes, they are going to make a deal or we will fix it with equal ease,” explained the president.

That is why he considers that Havana is “desperate” to reach a deal with its Administration immediately and assured that “it is only a matter of time” before they turn their sights towards the Caribbean country, implying that the military campaign against Iran has somewhat diverted the focus of the White House.

After the overthrow of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela at the hands of Washington in January, the Trump Government cut off the supply of crude oil that Caracas sent to Havana and has threatened to impose tariffs on any country that sends oil to the island, which is seriously strangling its economy.

In recent weeks Trump has said several times that the Cuban government is on the verge of collapsing as he considers that Marco Rubio “is doing a great job” with Cuba. He assures that “he will be remembered as the best Secretary of State in history” and that both Havana and the American people trust him.

Last Friday he compared the situation on the island to the war in Iran: Trump insisted that the island’s communist regime would be the next target after a “successful” campaign in the Middle East.
