Aussie kayaker nears end of 23,000km-paddle in wake of 1930s German explorer

An Australian adventurer is nearing the end of a journey that has taken her from Germany to Australia — in a kayak.

Inspired by German explorer Oskar Speck, 48-year-old Sandy Robson began her 23,000-kilometre journey on the Danube River in 2011.

Since then, she has done her best to paddle in the wake of the man who made the same journey 80 years earlier.

“Oskar Speck found himself in the Great Depression in Europe in 1932 and he was only 25 years old so he decided there was no better time to go travelling and see the world,” Ms Robson said.

“He thought he might go to Cyprus, paddle there in his kayak, and maybe get some work in the mines.

“By the time he’d done that, he’d really gotten hooked on the adventure and decided to contact the company that made the kayak and ask them to sponsor him to go all the way to Australia.”

“A lot of people said to me ‘the last person to try something crazy like this only lasted for two weeks’.

“But I got a lot of help from people along the way and I couldn’t have done it without all those people.”
