At least eight dead, one child injured and one missing after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in northeastern Afghanistan

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 186 kilometers, with its epicenter in the Jurm district of Badakhshan province, a mountainous region in northeastern Afghanistan, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

“In the Gosfandari area, which is part of the center of Kabul province, according to preliminary information, one child has been injured and eight people have died,” the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority confirmed in a statement.

The document added that in Khak-e-Jabbar, one of the districts of Kabul province, “some houses and walls have been damagedbut no victims have been reported.”

For its part, the Ministry of Health of the Taliban Government reported that it has placed medical facilities on high alert, instructing Kabul’s central hospitals and provincial health departments to ensure full preparation in case there are victims.

Afghanistan is located in an area of ​​high seismic activity due to its geographical location at the intersection of several tectonic plates.

In recent years, the country has suffered devastating earthquakes that have caused thousands of deaths and destroyed tens of thousands of homes, especially in rural areas where buildings are more precarious.
