Children Play and Nature Standing Committee 2019 Webinar 2

Play Innovation in an Urban Setting

This webinar will showcase two innovative urban play and nature projects so others may be inspired to adapt projects of this nature to suit their urban setting.

The three projects featured in this webinar include

  • The Open Streets Toronto Pop up Parks and School Streets project taking place in Canada,
  • The Neighbourhood Play Project in Queensland Australia
  • Qualifying new urban playgrounds in Tirana Albania.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After this webinar, participants will be able to do the following:

  • List the objectives and benefits of creating a play event through turning streets into parks for short periods of time
  • Describe the success, impact and legacy of Open Streets Toronto Pop Up Parks and School Streets
  • Recall the methodology behind the Neighbourhood Play Project and what was discovered on the journey
  • Discover the importance of safe access and wayfinding around urban neighbourhoods for children and parents
  • Define the impact that parental fear and lack of trust is having on children being able to roam and play around their neighbourhoods with siblings and friends

Hyahno Moser, Program Manager, Nature Play Program

Like most children of his generation, Hyahno spent most of his leisure time outside, therefore it came as no surprise to his family when he chose a career in Outdoor Education. For 10 years, Hyahno was involved in devising, facilitating, teaching and leading young people through world-class, outdoor education programs, using adventure and nature to teach children vital life-skills. Hyahno is passionate about nature play and believes the Nature Play program is a positive and practical way to ensure children participate in unstructured play in nature, delivering the myriad of benefits this type of play offers their physical and emotional health.
