A challenge ropes course is any number of single or joined elements that uses a series of wires and ropes strung between trees or poles. The wires and ropes are strung in a configuration called an element. Each element has its own unique features and name.

Challenge ropes courses (low or high) are used to develop team work, communication skills, goal setting, individual and group challenge, confidence and many other individual and team skills.

Challenge ropes course participants use physical and mental abilities to complete each element with the support of their team.

A high ropes course is at least 1.5 metres from the ground to the foot wire or rope on the element. There are two types of safety support systems participants on a high rope element can use. A lowerable system uses a top rope belay system and a belay person, an independent (non lowerable) system uses lanyards attached to the participant who then clips into the beginning of each element.
