Wangetti Trail Update

Market Engagement Opportunity

Posted on 23.05.2019

QORF has been asked by The Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games to share the this market  engagement opportunity on the proposed Wangetti Trail with the outdoors community.

Queensland Ecotourism Trails are ecologically sustainable opportunities that aim to deliver environmental, social and economic benefits to Traditional Owners, regional communities and to Queensland.

The first multi-day, dual-use hiking and mountain biking trail in Queensland, the proposed Wangetti Trail is an iconic ecotourism opportunity linking Port Douglas and Palm Cove with a mid-way point at Wangetti township. An extensive market engagement process will find the best proposals from Tourism Operators. In partnership with Traditional Owners, Tourism Operators will be able to provide experiences such as guided walks and operate low impact eco-accommodation along the trail once completed.

Queensland Ecotourism Trails is a program facilitated by the Tourism Development Projects Division at the Queensland Department of Innovation and Tourism Industry Development.

The detailed design for the Wangetti Trail alignment was released on 8 April 2019. On completion, the Wangetti Trail will stretch 94 kilometres and is expected to be ‘Grade 3’ (medium difficulty) for walkers and ‘More Difficult’ for mountain bikers, providing an accessible but challenging offering for visitors.

The Trail will feature public campsites or privately-operated eco-accommodation at five locations. Eco-accommodation may include cabins, retreats or huts. All facilities along the trail must be delivered in accordance with the Department of Environment and Science’s Implementation Framework: Ecotourism Facilities on National Parks.
