Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to gain ground in the technology industry and Pinterest is the most recent example of this transformation. This Tuesday, January 27, the platform announced the reduction of at least 15 percent of its workforce worldwide, a decision that will directly impact its human capital and that also contemplates the closure of physical office spaces towards the end of September.
The measure is part of a strategy to reallocate economic and technical resources towards teams specialized in the development of products based on deep learning models, with the aim of accelerating the integration of AI into its digital ecosystem.
PINTEREST SHARES FALL AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT
The announcement had an immediate reaction in the financial markets. During today’s trading in New York, Pinterest shares fell 8 percent, reflecting investor uncertainty about the impact of the company’s restructuring and technological turn.
AI AT THE CENTER OF THE USER EXPERIENCE
According to the company, this change of course seeks to more aggressively integrate artificial intelligence into its visual search engine. The goal is for the home feed, where users discover people, brands and content based on their recent activity, to offer much more personalized and relevant results.
In addition to improving the experience when searching and saving “Pins,” Pinterest plans to optimize its automated advertising tools to attract marketers and advertisers interested in AI-powered solutions.
COSTS AND INTERNAL RESTRUCTURING
The charges arising from this restructuring, before taxes, are estimated to be between $35 million and $45 million, an investment the company believes is necessary to compete in the future of digital discovery.
This adjustment adds to a global trend in the technology industry, where automation and intelligent systems are replacing traditional processes. Features like saving Pins or organizing group boards will increasingly be managed by AI, prioritizing operational efficiency over workforce size.
THE SOCIAL COST OF AUTOMATION
With this bet, Pinterest hopes that users can discover ideas even when they don’t have words to describe them. However, the social cost of this evolution is evident, reaffirming that today the company sacrifices personnel in favor of artificial intelligence to remain competitive in the race for the future of content and visual search.
