The president of Iran congratulates Sánchez for his position in the face of the “aggressions” of the US and Israel: “Moral values ​​still exist”

The president of Iran, Masud Pezeshkianpraised this Wednesday the Government of Pedro Sanchez for his “responsible conduct” after “opposing” the “flagrant human rights violations” of United States and Israel against the country.

It’s about the reaction to the words of Sánchez, who this Wednesday reaffirmed his position by warning that Spain will not be “complicit in something bad for the world” such as the current war in the Middle East, “just for fear of reprisals from someone”, in reference to the threats of the American president, Donald Trumpto cut off trade with the country due to its position on the conflict.

Republican congressman Lindsey Grahamone of the members of the Trump administration who has been most virulent towards the Spanish position in recent days and has criticized the Sánchez Government, has reacted to Iran’s words of gratitude by pointing out that “receiving recognition from the Iranian regime should be a wake-up call”: “They have lost their way.”

It is the same position that Sánchez has been holding since last Saturday, when the US and Israel bombed Iran for the first time. The president calls for respect for international law and asks both sides to cease attacks and return “to the framework of diplomacy and dialogue” to “not repeat the mistakes of the past,” alluding to the Iraq war.

“The spiral of violence is avoidable. No to war,” Sánchez said in his institutional statement, recovering the flag that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero claimed at the time.

The Executive has also refused to use the Spanish military bases of Rota and Morón, used jointly with the United States, for the war in Iran. This decision has been the basis of the Republican leader’s threats, although it has also been supported by the presidents of the main EU institutions and European partners such as France.

A sign of Madrid-Tehran relations

It is not the first time that Iran shows consonance with Sánchez’s position in the conflict with the US and Israel.

The Iranian ambassador to Spain, Reza Zabib, pointed out last Monday that he “values ​​the actions of the Spanish Government against the aggression”: “They have rejected the aggression, and that is valuable for us.”

Furthermore, the Iranian Embassy in Spain has expressed that it fully recognizes and respects the Spanish position of vetoing the use of the Rota and Morón bases, considering it in line with international law.

The relationship between Madrid and Tehran has historically been marked by a balance between pragmatism in their interests and Spain’s international obligations with the European Union and NATO.

This same Tuesday, The Iranian embassy in Madrid shared on its social networks a carousel of historical photographs between the Iranian and Spanish leaders, “an old relationship in the mirror of time.” In these images Felipe González, José María Aznar, Mariano Rajoy and Sánchez appear alongside Iranian presidents.
