Rubio builds bridges with Europe but warns against the “decline of the West”: “We do not want weak allies”

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, gave a strong message of unity with Europe this Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, where he assured that Washington’s destiny was intertwined with that of Europe. He has also stressed that the White House has no intention of breaking the transatlantic alliance.

The inaugural address represented a radical departure from last year, when Vice President JD Vance, from the same stage, launched an attack on European leaders, accusing them of censoring free speech and failing to control immigration.

“At a time when headlines are announcing the end of the transatlantic era, let it be clear to everyone that this is not our goal or our desire, because for us Americans, our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be children of Europe,” Rubio said.

Rubio said that the US “be prepared, if necessary, to do it on our own”, but recognizes that they want to do it “with you, our European friends” since “we are part of a single culture, the Western one” and that is why he explained that, despite “not always agreeing, we are concerned about Europe…we are connected on a spiritual level.”

“The two great wars of the last century remind us that our destiny is intertwined with yours,” he explained.

Rubio also argued that the “erasure of civilization” threatens both the United States and Europe, but maintained that “Europe’s destiny will never be irrelevant” to the United States.

For this reason, he emphasized that the United States wants to “revitalize an old friendship,” which unites “the old and new world.”

Against migration

During his speech, he also attacked “massive” and “uncontrolled migration”, which he considers “an urgent threat to the fabric of societies and the survival of our own civilization.”

““Mass migration is an ongoing crisis that is damaging the world,” he said.

For this reason, he assured that “we must regain control of the borders.”

“It is not xenophobia, it is an act of national sovereignty, and not doing so is not only abdicating one of your obligations to your people, but is a threat to survival,” he commented.

Rubio has been in favor of building bridges to Europe, but has defended that the US does not want to “have weak allies.”

“That would make us weak too; we do not want allies who remain in an old status quo, we want them to defend themselves so that no adversary tries to test us,” he stressed.

For this reason, he has called for “an alliance without fear”, which allows us to be “aligned” with the US: “We want a Western alliance.”

“For us Americans, our home is in the West,” he explained before adding that “acting together with Europe will help reestablish a healthy foreign policy.”

However, he warned that ““We in the United States have no interest in being polite and orderly guardians of the controlled decay of the West.”
