Osaka Receives Surprising Anonymous Donation of Gold Bars to Repair Water Pipes
Have you seen the price of gold lately?
In the Japanese city of Osaka, a citizen, aware of this value, decided to turn it into a benefit for his community.
The mayor and his team were shocked to discover that an anonymous resident had given 21 kilograms of gold bars to the city as a contribution to repair Osaka’s deteriorating municipal water pipe system.
Built during the postwar economic boom, some 160 miles of municipal pipes need replacing, and the total investment required far exceeds the value of the donated gold. However, the delivery of such high-quality capital by a private citizen left those responsible for the city government, known for their honorability, deeply moved.
“It’s an impressive amount and it left me speechless,” said Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama. “Tackling aging water pipes requires a huge investment, and I can’t thank you enough for the donation.”
In a statement, Yokoyama’s office said they will strictly respect the donor’s wish that his capital be used for the replacement of water pipes.

At current rates, the 21 kilos of gold are valued at about 560 million Japanese yen, enough to replace 1.2 miles of pipes.
Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city, recorded some 92 cases of pipe leaks, some of which were evident by the appearance of sinkholes along the city’s roads.
A Guardian report on the event indicated that Osaka’s municipal water system was built even earlier than other cities, and is now aging much faster.
