
Former Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, a leading figure of French socialism, died this Monday at the age of 88, his family announced.
In addition to being head of the Cohabitation Executive between 1997 and 2002, during the presidency of the conservative Jacques Chirac, Jospin was first secretary of the Socialist Party, deputy and minister in the governments of François Mitterrand.
He lost the presidential elections twice, being eliminated in the first round in 2002, against the leader of the far-right National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen.
