
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Indonesian waters this Thursday, generating a tsunami warning for the country and its neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, Malaysia y Filipinas.
The earthquake had its epicenter at 35 kilometers deep in the waters of the Moluccan Sea, in the northeastern region of the country, about 120 km off the coast of the island of Ternate, known for its spices.
The United States Tsunami Warning System, which records the magnitude of the earthquake as 7.8, published a tsunami “potential threat” alert for Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as for Indonesia, where The alert is for waves between 0.3 meters and one meter, according to the same source.
It also warned of the risk of waves of less than 0.3 meters on the coasts of Guam, Japan, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan.
At the moment there is no information on possible injuries, although the News channel Metro TV has broadcast images of damaged buildings.
The agency reported up to five magnitude aftershocks and regional governments have already urged their citizens to prepare for an evacuation.
Indonesia is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic activity where tectonic plates meet and earthquakes are frequent.
