The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) issued an alert message on the afternoon of Saturday, February 7, addressed to Mexicans who plan to attend Super Bowl LX this Sunday, to be held in Santa Clara, California, given the possibility of immigration raids led by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).
Through its official channels, the agency urged citizens to travel responsibly and respect local laws of the United States at all times.
CALL TO RESPECT UNITED STATES LAWS
In the message spread on social networks, the SRE recalled that the event will take place under a political context marked by a restrictive immigration agenda promoted by US President Donald Trump.
“Are you attending Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California? Travel responsibly and remember that local laws must be respected at all times,” the federal agency said.
CONSULATES AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE SUPPORT
The Secretariat stressed that, if assistance is required, the diplomatic representations of Mexico and the Consular Support Line are available to provide guidance and support to compatriots.
Consulates can intervene in situations such as loss of passport, being a victim of a crime, detention or arrest, as well as in cases of hospitalization.
WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF DETENTION
Faced with a possible arrest, the SRE recommended that Mexicans not fall into provocations or confront the US authorities. Likewise, he insisted on immediately requesting consular support using the phrase:
“I am a Mexican citizen and I want to talk to my consulate”.
On the other hand, the agency reiterated that consular accompaniment is a right of every Mexican person abroad and can be key to guaranteeing due process.
CONTEXT OF MIGRATORY TENSION
The Foreign Ministry’s call comes amid a tightening of immigration policies in the United States and in the face of the massive concentration of people generated by the Super Bowl, one of the most important sporting events in the world.
Finally, the SRE insisted on staying informed through official channels and acting with caution during the stay in US territory.
