In the midst of growing political and economic pressure on Cuba, the foreign ministers of Russia and the island held a telephone conversation to review the bilateral agenda and the international panorama.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, spoke with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, in an exchange that addressed both the cooperation between both countries and the geopolitical context facing the Caribbean nation.
During the conversation, Moscow reiterated its position of rejection of the economic and political pressures exerted by the United States against Cuba, pointing out that such measures are inadmissible and directly affect the country’s population.
RUSSIAN SUPPORT AGAINST WASHINGTON SANCTIONS
The dialogue occurs at a time of greater tension between Havana and Washington. The US government, headed by Donald Trump, recently declared a “national emergency” considering that Cuba represents a threat to its security and foreign policy.
The measure opened the door to additional sanctions, including the possibility of imposing tariffs on countries that sell oil to the island, a decision that has been denounced by the Cuban government as an attempt to reinforce the economic blockade.
This scenario has intensified the energy crisis in Cuba, already affected by reduced fuel supplies and decades of US economic embargo.
COOPERATION AND BILATERAL AGENDA
In addition to the political context, the foreign ministers discussed the schedule of upcoming meetings between both countries, including the 23rd meeting of the Russian-Cuban intergovernmental commission dedicated to commercial, economic, scientific and technical cooperation.
The relationship between Moscow and Havana has strengthened in recent years in strategic areas such as energy, trade and technical assistance, in an international context marked by geopolitical competition between powers.
A CONFLICT WITH REGIONAL REPERCUSSIONS
Analysts warn that the situation reflects a new chapter in tensions between the United States and Cuba’s allied countries.
While Washington increases economic pressure on the island, Russia insists on supporting its sovereignty and its right to define its own development model, a position that maintains a historical diplomatic rivalry that dates back to the Cold War.
