Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, announced this Tuesday that the forces of the Hebrew country had killed the secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, along with Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij militia.
From Tehran, for the moment, no official confirmation has been issued about Larijani’s death. Which maintains a halo of uncertainty in the region.
THE TARGETS: KEY LEADERS OF THE IRANIAN SYSTEM
Katz indicated that both officials were eliminated “overnight.” And he linked them with other members of the so-called “axis of evil.” In his statement, he stated:
“They joined the person responsible for the annihilation program, Khamenei, and all the eliminated members of the axis of evil in the depths of hell.”
Ali Larijani, considered by the United States to be one of the top leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its branches, was under a $10 million reward offered by Washington for information leading to his capture.
For his part, Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij militia, had been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and other countries for his role in repressing protests and demonstrations in Iran.
THE BASIJ MILITIA: ORIGIN AND REPUTATION
The Basij militia was created in 1979 as a public paramilitary organization, with functions of social control and support for the regime. In the West, its reputation is negative due to its history of internal repression and actions against protesters and dissidents.
REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL IMPACT
The attack reflects a new level of tension between Israel and Iran, and could reignite instability in the Middle East. The elimination of high-ranking figures from the Iranian military structure not only has internal political implications in Tehran, but also raises alerts in neighboring countries and international observers.
Analysts warn that this action could provoke retaliation from Iran, affecting allies in the region. Including Quds Force operations in Lebanon and other areas of Iranian influence.
