Peter Faust Dam to gain new recreation facilities

Posted on 18.06.2018

Whitsunday Regional Council is planning exciting new recreation facilities at Peter Faust Dam after taking over management of the recreation area from SunWater.

Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Dr Anthony Lynham said the move would allow the Council to progress their vision for the facility, which included camping areas and lakeside recreation facilities for fishing and boating.

The development is to be part of the draft Lake Proserpine Master Plan with construction expected to begin in late 2018 and finish in 2019.

“Peter Faust Dam is surrounded by a beautiful natural environment and we’re excited to provide an opportunity for Whitsunday Regional Council to maximise its use for community benefit,” Dr Lynham said.

“While SunWater’s core business is water delivery and infrastructure management, we understand the important role dams often play as recreation hubs for their local communities.

“The draft plans for Peter Faust Dam are stunning and we can’t wait to see Proserpine residents enjoying the new amenities on offer.”

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said Lake Proserpine, one of the area’s iconic natural assets, had been identified as a key area to develop recreational and tourism opportunities.

“Lake Proserpine is largely untapped and developing it into a recreation hub that can cater for camping, boating, fishing or just be a nice spot to visit for a barbecue will add significant value to the Whitsunday region,” Mayor Willcox said.

“Already a popular fishing spot, Lake Proserpine now has the opportunity to build and promote fishing-related tourism experiences, yet another avenue to showcase our world-class beauty and natural environments.

“We are extremely grateful to be working collaboratively with SunWater on this exciting project for Proserpine and the Whitsunday region.”

The Lake Proserpine Master Plan, currently in draft format, will be presented at a Whitsunday Regional Council meeting soon.
