New trails will leave a legacy for local riders

Posted on 26.09.2016

Dirt Art trail builder Simon French says the construction of new trails in the Nerang National Park for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will leave a legacy for local riders.

French and his team including Gold Coast and former junior world downhill champion and elite men overall world cup champion Nathan Rennie started working on the mountain bike course last week and are excited at the prospect of leaving a mark for future users of the popular Gold Coast trail.

“It’s certainly going to add a lot of value to the existing trail network and add a lot more challenging trail that is in Nerang at the moment.”

“We are not using any of the current existing trails as part of the Commonwealth Games course apart from a couple of fire trails, so the work we are doing sits alongside existing trails. But everything is going to be open all the way through apart from the new trails we are working on.”

With four different loops to be constructed for the event, French said each loop will have a different character to test the riders technical and physical ability.

“The course will start on a nice wide open fire trail and head off into a really rocky, technical more old school kind of course with lots of really steep rocky ledges, more slow speed technical riding before spits back out into really fast, jumpy, flowy descents with lots of gap jumps, drops and big berms.”

“The best thing though, from my point of view, is really the legacy prospects of the trail. It’s not just a one off event for a couple of hours we’re going to leave a great legacy behind for local riders.”

The Games course will be open for the public to ride when construction is expected to be completed in December.
