Construction underway on the ‘Bicycle Freeway’s’ missing link

Posted on 02.10.2018

The Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to enhance active transport continues, with construction of Stage E of the Veloway 1 Cycleway (V1) now underway.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said once completed the $45 million project will mean bike riders could enjoy a leisurely uninterrupted 17km journey from Eight Mile Plains to the CBD.

“This the largest package of V1 works, with the construction of about 1km of world class dedicated bikeway to deliver significantly improved safety for bike riders,” Minister Bailey said.

“Safety for riders will be improved along the route by providing physical separation from motorists with bridges soaring over Marshall Road, Sterculia Avenue and Bapaume Road at the Gaza Road off-ramp laying the foundations for future growth.

“This will encourage more people to ride more often with improved connectivity to local bike networks, hospitals, shopping precincts, educational facilities and public transport hubs.”

“This is a win for bike riders and a win for jobs, with an average of 42 jobs expected to be supported over the life of this project.”

Mr Bailey said construction was expected to ramp up over the next few months.

“There will be some impacts during the construction of the project,” he said.

“We are committed to working with residents and businesses to minimise any disruption caused by this work over the next two years.

The project is expected to be completed mid-2020, weather and construction conditions permitting.
