Many users are unaware that deleting messages or photos from a chat does not delete the files on the phone. WhatsApp automatically saves photos, videos and documents in hidden folders within the system. This “invisible trash” can become a risk: if the device is lost or hacked, the information is exposed and accessible to third parties.
The accumulation of sensitive files such as personal photographs, work documents or confidential information can end up in the hands of unauthorized people, even without the user noticing.
SILENT MALWARE AND HIDDEN THREATS
In addition to privacy, the hidden trash can be a channel for malware-infected files. Images, videos or documents sent by attackers can remain on the system, even if they are deleted from the chat, and some types of malware can execute automatically, compromising the security of the phone.
The risks range from data theft to remote control of the device, especially if a periodic cleaning of the folders where WhatsApp saves multimedia files is not carried out.
WHEN THE PHONE BECOMES SLOW AND VULNERABLE
The accumulation of files also affects cell phone performance: applications that close on their own, a slower system, errors when installing new apps or updating the device, and even loss of access to important files.
Therefore, keeping memory organized is key to avoiding crashes and critical failures.
HOW TO LOCATE AND EMPTY THE HIDDEN TRASH
WhatsApp does not offer direct access to the trash from the app, so you must use the phone’s file manager:
- Open the device’s file manager.
- Go to Internal Storage.
- Navigate: Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media.
- Find folders by file type: photos, videos, audios and documents.
- Select and delete items permanently.
This procedure allows you to empty the hidden trash without affecting active chats or messages and it is recommended to repeat it regularly to protect privacy and keep your phone agile.
